A Showcase of Treasured Possessions
Many thanks to Marhamah Sapandi and Saadiah Ahmad for
welcoming us into their home at 35M Jalan Greja, before it became a remnant of
our memories. Posing proudly beside this display in their kampong house
are Marhamah's cousins, Saadiah's sisters.
As we admire their glass-fronted display cabinet, we see carefully arranged sets of Pyrex glass containers, tea sets, dinnerware and other household wares behind the sliding glass doors. Reserved for Hari Raya and other special occasions, these items were brought out only when the occasion called for them.
This was truly a showcase of treasured possessions.
Above the cabinet, decorative items add warmth and
personality to the room. The vintage artificial floral sculptures perched on
pedestal planters bring back waves of memories from the 1960s and 1970s.
Then there is the wall calendar, another familiar fixture in
kampong homes. Here, it features a portrait image that serves as both
decoration and daily reference.
Hanging above the calendar is a framed landscape print
depicting a peaceful tropical scene, bringing images of tranquil countryside,
rivers, distant hills and idyllic surroundings into the home.
And not forgetting the thermometer mounted right above it
all, quietly keeping watch over the day's temperature!
Together, these items form a complete display that softens
the timber walls. Flanked by two windows dressed in curtain frills, the
arrangement helped transform a simple, functional living space into one that
felt welcoming, personal and lived-in.
To visiting guests, such displays were often among the first
things to catch the eye upon entering the house.
Looking back, these display cabinets were more than pieces
of furniture. They were silent storytellers of kampong life, revealing the
aspirations, tastes and values of families who took great pride in creating a
warm and respectable home. Long before designer interiors became fashionable,
kampong residents were already curating their own displays, each shelf and wall
decoration reflecting a unique family story.
Thank you, Marhamah, for sharing this lovely and memorable
photograph with us.
