The Soundtrack of our Bedok Kampong
The euphoria that surrounded Singapore's iconic 1960s group, The Crescendos, resonated far beyond the radio waves and concert halls of the day. It reached deep into our Bedok kampong, where the humble Ho family home at 6C became an unlikely centre of musical history. It was here that founding member Raymond Ho and his bandmates regularly gathered to rehearse before performances across Singapore, filling the kampong with the sounds that would later captivate a nation.
Fans eagerly bought their records, played them repeatedly on
home turntables, and carefully preserved them over the years as cherished
reminders of a special era. The unmistakable voice of Susan Lim, together with
the band's infectious melodies, provided the soundtrack to many youthful
memories, especially after the success of their early hit recordings.
One such admirer was Maurice Fernando, who purchased these
two EP records in 1965 when he was just 21. As the eight songs played one after
another on his record player, one can easily imagine the enjoyment he derived
from favourites such as ‘Silver Threads and Golden Needles’ and the many other
beloved Crescendos classics. Upon Maurice's passing in 2019, these treasured
records were inherited by his nephew, Albert De Silva, who recognised their
significance and lovingly kept them. More than half a century later, they
remain precious family heirlooms and continue to be cherished in his
possession.
Looking back, our Bedok kampong can proudly claim its share
of notable personalities, from celebrated actors to well-known entertainers who
brought a touch of glamour to our humble community. Yet it was perhaps the
music of The Crescendos that left the deepest and most enduring mark. Their
songs became the soundtrack of a generation and, in many ways, the soundtrack
of our kampong itself.
Today, much like the kampong that has since disappeared,
some members of the band and many of their devoted fans are no longer with us.
Yet the music lives on through memories, stories, and treasured keepsakes such
as these records preserved by Albert. They stand as a living memorial to a
golden chapter in Singapore's musical heritage, reminding us that some of the
nation's most enduring melodies once echoed from the very heart of our Bedok
kampong.
Thank you, Albert, for sharing this wonderful memory of your
maternal uncle with us, and for helping to keep these precious musical memories
alive for future generations.
