Looking back at our Bedok kampong of days past that included
all the adjoining areas like Jalan Greja, we could quietly boast of something
extraordinary: Malay film legends once lived among us. One of them was the
iconic Nordin Ahmad.
A Star Just Three Houses Away
For Yitzhak Usov, the memory is vivid. Nordin lived just
three houses down from him at 33L Jalan Greja. Marhamah Sapan, who
stayed at 35M, remembers living barely 50 metres away - all neighbours
sharing the same sandy lanes, the same evening breeze, the same kampong spirit.
It is remarkable to imagine: a man celebrated across
Malaysia and Singapore, yet here in Bedok he was simply another resident,
another familiar figure in the neighbourhood.
Why Bedok Became Home
Born in Penang in 1932, Nordin entered the film world early -
starring in his first movie at just 19. When he began his contract with Cathay‑Keris
Film Productions in 1956, it made perfect sense for him to relocate to
Singapore. With the studio’s office along East Coast Road, Bedok offered both
convenience and community.
He lived here with his wife Salmah Ibrahim and family.
Yitzhak distinctly recalls chatting with his pre-teen son Norman at the house,
although Nordin himself was often away filming.
“We hardly saw him on most days,” Yitzhak recalls. The life
of a star, even in a kampong, was never quite ordinary.
A Career of Accolades - And a Heart for the Kampong
Across a twenty‑year career, Nordin starred in nearly fifty
films, directed ten, and became one of the most respected actors of his
generation. He was nominated six times for Best Actor and once for Best
Supporting Actor at the Malaysian Film Festival - winning twice, for Red
Datok Chuchu (1963) and Hang Jebat (1961).
Yet what our kampong remembers most is not his fame, but his
character.
During the racial riots of the 1960s, Nordin paired with
Yitzhak to help maintain peace and harmony within the kampong. It was a quiet
act of leadership, rooted not in celebrity but in neighbourly duty.
A Loss Felt Across the Region
In June 1971, at just 41 years old, Nordin Ahmad passed away
from yellow fever. His death was mourned across Malaysia and Singapore - and
quietly, deeply, in Bedok, where he had once walked the same paths as all of
us.
A Posthumous Honour, 55 Years Later
On 11 July 2026, the Penang state government awarded Nordin
the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) - conferring upon him the title Datuk -
during the 85th Birthday Celebration of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Ramli
Ngah Talib. (hmetro.com.my)
His nephew, Mohd Sobri Mohd Sidik, who received the award on
his behalf, said that even 55 years after his passing, Nordin remains one of
the most important icons of Malay cinema’s golden age. We wholeheartedly agree.
In our kampong, he was more than a legend on screen. He was
a neighbour - part of the tapestry of Bedok’s living memory.

Georgetown: Legasi legenda filem Melayu Nordin Ahmad terus
diiktiraf apabila kerajaan Pulau Pinang menganugerahkan Darjah Setia Pangkuan
Ngah Talib.

berlipat, kajang hamba mengkuang layu, dagang Pak Malau dagang bertempat,
dagang hamba musafir lalu' menerusi filem Seri Mersing.
"Sumbangan beliau bukan sahaja mencorakkan
orang ramai agak terhad kerana perlu mematuhi peraturan.
minat, malah remaja pun dah mula mengenali Allahyarham jadi saya rasa kita
Productions dikenali menerusi naskhah hebat seperti filem Hang Tuah, Anak-ku
Sazali, Semerah Padi, Air Mata Duyung, Sultan Mahmud Mangkat, Dijulang,
Gurindam Jiwa dan Lanchang Kuning.

when the Penang state government awarded the Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (DSPN) - which carries the title Datuk - posthumously to the iconic figure of Malay cinema in conjunction
with the 85th Birthday Celebration of the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib. His nephew, Mohd
Sobri Mohd Sidik, 60, who represented the late actor in receiving the
award, said that even 55 years after his
passing, the celebrated artiste not only brought honour to Penang but also
became one of the most important icons in the golden age of Malay cinema. According to him, the award is not merely a symbol of
recognition for a highly talented artiste, but also a profound tribute to the
legacy of a Penang-born figure who elevated the art of acting in Malaysia to a
distinguished level. “As his heir, I believe this award is a very fitting
recognition that aligns with the immense contributions he made to the nation’s
artistic landscape, and we express our deepest appreciation and thanks to the
state government for this decision. “His excellence as a respected, charismatic and
authoritative actor placed his name among the most important icons in the
history of Malay cinema’s golden era.
“Throughout his life, he was synonymous with the role of the
Malay warrior and with the iconic classical dialogue: ‘Kajang Pak Malau kajang berlipat, kajang hamba mengkuang layu; dagang

“His contributions not only shaped the development of the
national film industry but continue to serve as reference and inspiration for
generations of actors and researchers to this day,” he said when met.
Mohd Sobri said the late Nordin was the second of six
siblings, and the only surviving sibling is his youngest sister, Rokiah Ahmad, 84, who now lives in
Kepala Batas. However, she could not attend the ceremony due to health reasons.
He added that the DSPN is the first Datukship ever awarded to the late actor, and previously his
name had been immortalised at FINAS’
Layar Bintang in 2001 as recognition of his status as a national screen
legend.
Mohd Sobri also shared that the heirs and family members
plan to display the award at the Nordin
Ahmad Gallery at an appropriate time so that fans, researchers and the
public may view it.
He said that although the gallery - currently located at Sekolah Kebangsaan Permatang Pasir -
has received positive response since its establishment about two years ago,
public access remains limited due to school regulations.
Therefore, Mohd Sobri said the late actor’s heirs hope to
find a new, more suitable location
for the gallery so that it can be visited by all segments of society with wider
and more open access.
“Nowadays, it’s not only the older generation who admire him
- even teenagers have begun to learn about him. So I feel we need to find
another location that allows everyone to see more closely the legacy he left
behind,” he said.
The late Nordin was born in Kampung Kota, Permatang Pasir on 4 August 1929 and breathed his
last on 15 June 1971 at the age of 41 at Singapore
General Hospital due to jaundice.
He was also a director and scriptwriter, and had served with
Malay Film Productions and Cathay-Keris Film Productions, known
for major works such as Hang Tuah, Anak-ku Sazali, Semerah Padi, Air Mata Duyung,
Sultan Mahmud Mangkat Dijulang, Gurindam Jiwa and Lanchang Kuning.
